Mixed messages from America about cannabis plants in the 1930s/40s

I’ve been doing a little digging into the history of America’s relationship with Cannabis. I won’t go into the nuances of all the stories and arguments; instead I have two things I want to share…

First up is this fantastic is this video, produced by the US Department of Agriculture in 1942, called ‘Hemp for victory’. Fibres from cannabis plants make strong, durable hemp fibres, which can be processed to make a wide range of products from rope to cloth. Hemp from overseas sources were in short supply during the war, and so this film was made to encourage farmers to grow hemp as part of the war effort.

On the other hand, only a few years earlier in 1935, this amazing advertisement was distributed by the Federal Bureau of Narcotics…
